Tree & Shrub Watering

When it comes to water, most of us forget about our trees and shrubs. Anything that large must be able to get all the water it needs, right?
Actually, 90% of a tree’s roots are in the top 18" of soil. So even these large plants are constantly competing for water. In fact, the most common cause of tree injury is lack of water.
How often your trees and shrubs need water depends on what the plant is and where it’s growing. Answers vary from once a month to once a week. It’s best to look for signs, like leaves turning brown or leaves and stems wilting.
Like with your turf, you should not water trees and shrubs too frequently, but do it deeply. As an average, you should leave the sprinkler or soaker hose on three times as long as you would when you water grass.
So “water” you waiting for? Pull out the hose and water now for larger, healthier, and greener trees and shrubs tomorrow.
